Whales White Ale

The cooler fall and winter months see people flocking to shorelines across the United States, as they embark on whale watching adventures from Florida to Alaska and Massachusetts to Hawaii! Your Whale’s White Ale t-shirt from Vintage Beer Shirt Club this month would be the perfect compliment to your whale watching adventures… or just to show off to your friends.

Brewed as one of the smaller, less successful labels from Baltimore’s popular National Brewing Co. in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this artwork is one of our favorites so far. National Brewing began operations in 1872 and persisted until the late 1970s with a 13 year shut down during the prohibition years. With its reopening in 1933, National began producing National Bohemian or “Natty Boh” – the official sponsor of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team and the official beer of the city of Baltimore. They also produced Colt 45, which contrary to popular belief, is not named after the gun, but rather after 1963 Colts running back #45 Jerry Hill.

After a series of mergers, beginning in 1975 the rights from the brewery were eventually acquired by Stroh’s in 1996. The original brewing complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and currently houses a variety of business and office spaces.

Today, National Bohemian and Colt 45 are owned and produced by Pabst in Wisconsin.  Thankfully for all of us, Whale’s White Ale never quite took off as a popular brew, and no trademark ever existed, which is why we can bring you this exceptionally cool shirt to enjoy!
